INTERNATIONAL SANCTIONS AGAINST APARTHEID 2.0 CAMPAIGN

THE Marikana Massacre in which 34 mine-workers were killed and 70 injured by a private army working for an international mining conglomerate has shown the world that South Africa has failed its historical compact with its own people.

The tragic events of the past weeks is proof that our country has yet to learn from its past and this terrible incident is just the tip of an iceberg.

Marikana is not an isolated event. The cold-blooded murder of activist Andries Tatane in 2011 by the South African Police, the murder of SAMWU shop steward Petros Msiza also by the Police, 1000s of farm deaths, the xenophobic pogroms against immigrants in 2010 and the gross failure of our government to prosecute the perpetrators of crimes against humanity following the recommendations of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission, all point to a lawless state that is unwilling and unable to abide by international norms and standards

The South African government’s continued support for corrupt regimes around the world including Bahrain and Syria, while allowing the massacre of its own people, is now all too apparent. The corruption of our nation’s institutions and structures, the failure of the government to support apartheid reparations, the ruling parties corrupt arms deals, the ongoing erosion of our constitutional democracy by a kleptocracy and party oligarchy who have shown themselves eager to prosecute the victims while molly coddling the perpetrators, all point to the need for international sanctions, in the form of boycotts, pressure and isolation.

We need to remind our leaders that we will not stand by while our government murders its own people. We will no longer listen to the ongoing lies and deceit of those in charge, our rulers who live lavish lives of luxury while millions go hungry and while workers are denied a living wage.

We will not simply wash away and forget the past without accounting for those who have died, those who have fought and sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom.

We will not allow large corporations to continue with their corruption of our government and state institutions, we will not allow the perpetrators to build armies and to rewrite history in the interests of political expediency. We will not allow the labour apartheid in which workers receive less than $500 a month to continue, we will not allow the the rape and plunder of our country in the interests of capital.
